September 2006

Dear Lab Schools Parent:

It’s Back-to-School time! The new school year is off and running and if this happens to be the first for you at the Laboratory Schools, welcome!

This week marks the beginning of my 10th year as a Lab school parent as well as the beginning of my one-year term as president of our Parents’ Association. And like so many parents at this time of the year, I’m excited to have my kids back in the classroom (and out of the house!) and I am eager to help make the coming year as worthwhile and rewarding for them as possible.

I cannot emphasize enough how important it is to have a vibrant, active Parents’ Association. And as you hopefully already noticed, the PA doesn’t waste time making its presence felt. If you dropped off your kids in front of the main entrance this week, then you noticed the parent volunteers who greeted families and ushered children to their destinations. If you stopped in the Blaine Hall lobby, you also saw the PA’s handiwork in the form of the coffee, bagels and other refreshments that were provided to greet parents, faculty and administrators.

And that’s just Week One.

Please mark your calendar for next month’s PA-sponsored visit by Dr. Michael Thompson. The author of “Raising Cain: Protecting the Emotional Life of Boys” and “Speaking of Boys: Answers to the Most-Asked Questions about Raising Sons. Dr. Thompson will speak October 24, at 7 p.m. in Mandel Hall. His topic will be “The Pressured Child: Helping Your Child Find Success in School and Life.”

The new year is full of many other exciting activities for every member of the Lab schools community and the PA’s success as a supportive resource for the Lab Schools is dependent upon the involvement of our parent volunteers. That’s why I strongly encourage you to visit our Web site and complete the volunteer form. For a paper form download, print . And just as the PA is contacting you via the Internet, please feel free to contact us online at parents@uclspa.org.

Another way to get involved in the PA and stay informed about Lab activities is through our meetings. Our first meeting of the year will be held at 7 p.m. on Monday, September 11 in Judd Hall, Rm. 126. Next week’s meeting will feature Lab Director David Magill, who will discuss his vision for the new school year.

I hope to see you Monday night and I look forward to working with you throughout the 2006-07 academic year!

Regards,
Bennie

Welcome back to school! The new 06-07 school year is underway and we are looking forward to a great year. On Tuesday, September 5th, the halls of the school came back to life. The students arrived by bike, car, bus, feet and vans. There was a lot of excitement and anticipation all around the school. Students were greeted by the administration and teachers as they started the new year. Old and new friends greeted one other in the crowded hallways.

After dropping off the children, parents were able to meet and greet while enjoying the bagels, fruit and refreshments, courtesy of the LS Council. The Bagel Breakfast was available in the Blaine lobby for the first three days of school.

On Wednesday evening September 6th, the HS council hosted a welcome back reception to honor the new HS principal Matthew Horvat and welcome parents of U-High students who are new to the Laboratory Schools. Parents had a chance to meet the new principal, were treated to a buffet and refreshments, and were able to meet and greet families who are new to the school, as well as catch up with old friends.

On Friday evening September 8th, the MS council hosted the Back-to-School Barbeque in the Blaine Courtyard. Council members along with other parent volunteers cooked and served up hundreds of burgers and hotdogs to the many MS families who attended. Parents enjoyed the food and the chance to meet new parents and to meet up with old friends. The students loved having the “run” of the courtyard, enjoying the food and playing games.
