** Innisbrook Wrapping Paper Fundraiser Continues through Tuesday October 4th.
** Walk to School Day Wednesday October 5th, 7:30 AM - 9:00 AM.
Students from the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools will be joining schools from around the world to celebrate Walk
to School Day. Now in its ninth year, Walk to School Day is expected to include over 3,000 schools from
all 50 states. The idea is to walk to school together with a purpose - to promote health, safety, physical activity and
concern for the environment. So come on out, and walk your kids to school!
** Grade 7 Parent Coffee and Conversation Meeting Wednesday October 5th, 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM in Judd 126.
This Coffee and Conversation meeting is a chance for Grade 7 parents to meet with the Principal, and Dean of Students, and their child’s counselor. Parents will hear about the unique programs and features of their
child’s grade level, and have an opportunity to ask questions and network with other parents.
** Grade 5 Parent Coffee and Conversation Meeting Thursday October 6th, 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM in Judd 126.
This Coffee and Conversation meeting is a chance for Grade 5 parents to meet with the Principal,
and Dean of Students, and their child’s counselor. Parents will hear about the unique programs and features of their child’s
grade level, and have an opportunity to ask questions and network with other parents.
** Hispanic Heritage Celebration Friday October 7th, 12:00 PM - 2:00 PM in Upper Kovler
As a way of celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month, which is recognized from September 15 - October 15, Nahui Ollin, a group of
ceremonial Aztec dancers, will perform for both the lower and middle schools. There will be two performances: The Middle
School performance will be from 12:10-12:55pm and the Lower School (K-4) performance will take place immediately after,
from 1:15-2:00pm.
** Parent/Teacher Conferences LS Nursery-4th grade, and MS 5th graders no school for grades N-5
Monday October 10th, 7:30 AM - 4:00 PM in Lower School classrooms and in the Middle School homerooms.
Parent/Teacher Conferences are an opportunity for parents and teachers to share their observations of a child's growth.
** Monthly Parents' Association Meeting - Monday October 10th, 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM in Judd 126.

** Community of Givers phonathon begins Sunday October 16th, 6:00 PM - 9:00 PM .
Parent volunteers will be calling to secure your annual pledge to the Community of Givers annual fund. Your participation

** Middle School Picture Day - Monday October 17th, 8:00 AM - 3:00 PM .
Middle School students will have their grade level and individual pictures taken on this day.
** PARENTS' ASSOCIATION SPEAKER EVENT! Please join us, October 18th,
7:00 PM, JUDD 126!!!
The Parent Association is pleased to host Dr. Roni Cohen-Sandler, parenting
expert and author, at a parent education event titled "Stressed-Out Teens:
Helping Them Thrive in the Age of Pressure", based on her most recent book.
The talk will explore Roni's study with 3000 teens which found how the
pressure to succeed academically and socially can have detrimental effects
on performance, self-esteem and well-being. Her presentation will give
parents and educators practical strategies to reduce stress, build
resiliency and bolster confidence, and thus reduce parental stress as well.

** High School Homecoming Dance Saturday October 22nd, 8:00 PM - 11:00 PM at International House Ballroom
Homecoming dance 8:00-11:00. Tickets go on sale the week prior to the event. Current ID card required.

** High School Parent/Teacher Conference Sign-up Monday October 24th 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM in High School Office UH107
Sign up in the high school office (UH107) to reserve time to talk to teachers during parent/teacher conferences regarding
your child.
** Recital Night Wednesday October 25th, 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM at Fulton Recital Hall
Recital Night for lab school students. Admission is free, public is welcome. Fulton Recital Hall, is located on the fourth floor
of Goodspeed Hall, 1010 E. 59th Street. The facility is fully handicapped accessible.
** HS Fall Theatre Production - Friday October 27th, 7:30 PM - 10:00 PM in Belfield Theatre.
Fall production. 7:30-10:00. Tickets on sale in High School prior to the production. For further information call Belfield

** Middle and High School Recruitment Open House - Sunday October 30th, 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM in Univesity High School.
Parents and their children entering grades 5-11 interested in attending the Lab Schools are invited to tour the school.
Currently enrolled Lab School 8th graders and their families are encourage to attend this open house.
The U-High administration welcomed new students and freshman at an orientation on Thursday, September 1st.
The students were introduced to staff, received valuable information and had a session with their advisors.
Parents of freshman were invited to attend an orientation where they were introduced to staff, received valuable
information and met the advisors. Families of freshman and new HS students enjoyed dinner in the cafeteria giving
the students and parents an opportunity to meet and greet each other.
Thank you to Mr. McFarlane and the administration for a wonderful event.
A charitable start to the school year was the volunteer effort to gather backpacks filled with necessary items
for victims of hurricane Katrina. Parent volunteers were on hand to accept the backpacks and load them onto trucks
destined for shelters along the Gulf Coast. Parents Melissa Gray and Debbie Chizewer spearheaded the effort, in conjunction
with the University of Chicago Hospitals. Over 450 backpacks were collected from Lab Schools families, faculty and staff.
Thanks to all who donated their time and resources and backpacks. Additional backpack donation opportunities are being
planned.
Parents who attended the first Parents' Association meeting of the school year had the opportunity to hear a report of the state
of the school presented by Mr. Magill. This month's meeting enjoyed a large turn-out, with more dads in attendance. Details of this
meeting will be provided in the September meeting minutes, that will be available online after the October meeting.
Parents were warmly welcomed back to school with the various social events such as the MS Back-to-School Barbeque,
and the parent receptions held at the start of each schools’ Open House. School council members and room parents added
that “extra” touch by providing opportunities for parents to meet and greet. Thanks to all of the parent volunteers who
made these events possible.
Mark your calendars! The first Giant Gym Nights of the season are coming up.
Fifth and sixth graders will be able to join their classmates from 6 to 9 p.m. in Kovler Gym on Friday October 14.
Seventh and eighth graders will have their evening on Friday, December 9.
For those of you who are new to Lab, Giant Gym Nights are open only to Laboratory Schools students. It is an evening of
volleyball, basketball, gymnastics, badminton, soccer, floor hockey, Ga-Ga, and swimming.
(interested students should bring their swimsuits). If it proves popular, the pool will be open again for winter Giant Gym
Nights. All students must wear their P.E. uniforms and all Lab rules of student conduct apply.
Parental permission is not required, however students must sign themselves in, and must provide a phone number where a
parent or guardian can be reached, that evening, if necessary. Parents must come into the building and sign out
students at the end of the evening.

High school students are planning to sponsor an all-schools fall festival, themed the “Real U-High”, on October 29th,
from 2:00 – 7:00 PM. The event will have something for everyone, from nursery school through high school.
There will be movies, storytelling, arts & crafts, food, games & prizes, a maze, and much more. The event will primarily
take place in the HS cafeteria and courtyard, with movies to be shown in Judd Hall.
Parent volunteers are very much needed. Parent, AnneMarie Miles is coordinating the parent involvement end.
Parents are needed to assist the HS students in the areas of food sales, ticket sales, arts & crafts, movies, hall monitors,
the maze, the haunted house, t-shirt sales, and set-up & clean-up.
Two planning meetings have been held so far. If you would like to help in any way, with this event, contact AnneMarie Miles.
The Back to School Barbeque for the Middle School was held on September 9th in the Blaine Courtyard.
The weather was great, food plentiful, and attendance was over 600 new and returning parents and kids.
Mr. Wright was able to get several kids together on short notice,
to perform excerpts from Studs Turkel’s, “Working” to raise money for the Hurricane Katrina victims.
Approximately, $3,500.00 was raised, with a matching gift from a Middle School family.
The Middle School Council delivered leftover uncooked hot dogs, hamburgers, and unused buns to
the Hurricane Processing Center located at the Civic Center on 13th & Racine.
The Middle School Council would like to take this opportunity to thank and acknowledge the following volunteers for
helping with set-up, cooking and clean-up:

A special thanks to Ms. Bea Harris for permitting us to store and prepare food in the Home Economics Room, and to Mr. Alexis Wright
for staying with us to the end. The Middle School Council would also like to thank everyone else who contributed to making
this a wonderful event.
Co-chaired by Paula Worthington and Julie Marie Lemon, the group presented and discussed issues relevant to parents of
students with unconventional learning styles.
The group is planning a "resources guide" for parents, and to make information from these meetings available
to parents, via the web.
The LD@LAB is exploring the possibility of bringing in Laura Thompson, a social worker at the Hyde Park Day School to
speak to parents. Ms. Thompson was involved with the start-up of a parent group at HPDS, and is willing to share some
of her expertise and experience with LD@LAB. Look for a date in October. The group also hopes to invite Carla Young,
principal of the Nursery School/Kindergarten at Lab, to speak about the school's use of Mel Levine's Schools Attuned
program in November.
Watch for announcements on further meetings to come this fall.
The Parents' Association has elected to re-instate the Innisbrook wrapping paper fundraiser.
Proceeds benefit the Parents' Association fund for the school.
Although this fundraiser has been very successful for the PA in the past, there had always been a question as to who can
continue to spearhead the initiative. This year the PA is fortunate to have two parents Stacey Pandolfi
and Carol Kamin, step up to coordinate the efforts.
This program continues through October 4th.
