Here is a reminder of
some of the upcoming events and news of other happenings. For more
information on any of the events listed or to get details on all other

** Grades 5/6 Parent-to-Parent Discussion Group – October – 17th, 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM in Judd 126
Parents of 5th and 6th graders are invited to meet and talk about issues
related to adolescent development and parenting, with the aid of a skilled
facilitator.
** Recital Night – October 24th. 7:30 PM - 9:00 PM at Fulton
Hall- 1010 East 59th St.
A showcase for students who are pursuing classical music study in voice,
winds, string, and piano.
** No School for students in grades 9 and 12 – October 18th.
PSAT testing for Grades 10 and 11 .
** 11th and 12th Grade Parent Coffee with the High School Principal –
October 18th. from 7:30 AM – 8:30 AM in Judd 126
Parents of Juniors and Seniors will have the opportunity to get to know High
School Principal Matthew Horvat over coffee and rolls. No RSVP necessary.
** Parent Teacher Conferences Nursery-4th Grade – October 20th,
8:00 AM to 4:00 PM
Parent Teacher Conferences provide an opportunity for parents to discuss
their individual child's progress with teachers. Please schedule a
conference with your child's teachers. There is no school for children in
grades N-4.
** Grade 5 Conference Day (No school for 5th grade students) – October
20th, 8:20 AM - 2:35 PM
Parents have the opportunity to meet with their child's homeroom teacher to discuss their child's progress.
** Recruitment Open House – October 22nd, 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM at
University High School
Student-led tours will offer prospective students in grades 6 through 11 and their parents the opportunity
to visit our classrooms, meet with our teachers, and talk to the kids who really know our school.
No reservations necessary. Tours will be conducted at 1:00, 1:45, 2:30, and
3:15. Parents of Lab School 8th graders are encouraged to attend the 2:00 to 4:00 PM sessions.
** HS Council Meeting – October 25th, at 6:00 PM in Judd 126
Find out what's happening in the high school. HS Parents this is your chance to come out and meet other parents, share your ideas and issues, and hear from the
HS principal and counselors.

The Parent Association and the Middle School will host Michael G. Thompson, Ph.D.,
psychologist, school consultant and author,
on October 24th, 7:00PM, at Mandel Hall located 1131 East 57th Street.
Dr. Thompson’s talk is titled: The Pressured Child: Helping Your Child Find Success
in School and Life.
Michael Thompson is an author/co-author
of seven books, including the New York Times bestseller, “Raising
Cain: Protecting the Emotional Life of Boys,” “Speaking of Boys: Answers to
the Most-Asked Questions about Raising Sons” and “Best Friends, Worst
Enemies: Understanding the Social Lives of Children.” At present he is at
work on a new book for parents of boys entitled “It’s a Boy!”
A dedicated speaker and traveler, Dr. Thompson has appeared on the Today
Show, the Oprah Winfrey Show, ABC 20/20 and CBS 60 Minutes. He was the
co-author, host and narrator of a two-hour PBS documentary entitled “Raising
Cain: Focus on Boys” which aired in January of 2006. Visit the "Raising

This coming January, 2007, Dr. Thompson is teaming up with his long-time friend and
colleague, Edward Hallowell, M.D. the co-author of “Driven to Distraction”
and “Delivered from Distraction,” to present a six-evening teleconferencing
course for parents and teachers on the subject of raising boys in an ADHD
world.

High school students will host the all-schools fall festival, Bizaarnival on October 28th,
from 12:00 – 5:00 PM.
There will be hay rides on the Midway, movies, storytelling, arts & crafts, a haunted house, food, games & prizes, and much more.
The event will primarily take place in the HS cafeteria and courtyard, with movies to take place in Judd Hall.
Parents and teachers are helping to make this event a success. Lab parents and co-chairs Ann Marie Miles and Evan Zemil
encourage all Lab families to come out and enjoy the day. Adults and children of all ages are welcome.

School council members and room parents added that “extra” touch by providing opportunities for parents to meet and greet
at the parent receptions held at the start of each schools’ Open House. Prior to each schools Open House event, parents
enjoyed food and refreshments. Thanks to all of the parent volunteers who helped to make each reception a success.
In addition to the academic information that parents might have received at the various Open House events,
parents had another opportunity talk to other parents,as well as hear from and chat with the principal,
at the various "Coffee & Conversation" meetings provided by the MS
principal and the HS principal.
Additional parent to parent forums are scheduled to take place throughout the remainder of October:
Tuesday October 17th Parent-to-Parent Discussion Group, for parents of 5th & 6th grade students, 7:00 PM to 8:30PM in Judd 126.
Wednesday morning October 18th HS Principal chat, for parents of 11th & 12th grade students, 7:30 AM in Judd 126.
On Wednesday October 11th, parents of 9th & 10th grade students had the opportunity to meet and hear from principal
Matthew Horvat, at a first in a series of morning chats with the principal. Parents had a chance to talk to other parents
and talk to the principal. Mr. Horvat presented a summary of what is happening in the high school, fielded questions from
parents and noted their ideas and issues presented. The meeting was very informative.
A meeting for parents of 11th & 12th grade students is scheduled for Wednesday morning October 18th at 7:30 AM in Judd 126.
The HS Council has set goals for the 2006-2007 school year that include: increasing parent involvement, increasing
communication among parents, and collaboration with the administration.
In the area of increasing parent involvement, the HS Council has gotten parents to volunteer to be mentors to families
new to the high school.
In the area of increasing communication among parents, the HS Council distributed the first issue of the newsletter to
HS parents. The next issue is scheduled for distribution at the end of October and will include content from the HS
principal. The HS Council maintains a webpage for HS parents. The HS Council plans to offer periodic informational
meetings for parents of HS students. The first of these meetings will take place Wednesday October 25th at 6:00 PM,
in Judd 126.
In the area of collaboration with the administration, the HS Council has had an initial meeting with principal Matthew
Horvat where the councils preliminary agenda was discussed and issues such as a joint effort between the high school
and the PA for an in-school test prep program, the possibility of making the ISBN's for text books available prior to
the start of school, drug and alcohol use prevention at the homecoming dance, and the possibility of a joint effort
between the high school and the PA to host
Dr. Michael Bradley to talk about teens.
The HS Council encourages parents of high school students, to attend this first HS Council meeting, on October 25th. Come and bring any ideas and issues that you may have.
Many Parents, faculty, and staff members turned out for the second annual Partici-party held on September 16th, 6-8 pm at the
CIS Kersten Family Atrium. Party-goers enjoyed buffet style food and refreshements, while being provided the opportunity to
talk to other parents, faculty, and staff.
Laboratory Schools Director, David Magill provided remarks and welcomed guests to the new Gordon Center for Integrative Science (CIS).
Throughout the evening, guests had the opportunity to tour the center.
This year's, keynote speaker was James L. Madara, M.D., Dean of the Biological Sciences Division & the Pritzker School of
Medicine, University Vice-President for Medical Affairs, Chief Executive Officer of the University of Chicago Medical Center,
and fellow Lab parent.
Guest viewed a video showcasing the collaborations between Lab's high school science department and the
University of Chicago faculty at CIS, featuring Harinder Singh (Lab parent) and
Steven Sibener (Lab parent), both University faculty, Sharon Housinger, Chair of Lab's Science Department, and Katie
Shakman, 2006 graduate, who did research in the labs this past summer.
