No School for all schools, holiday break 12/18 through Monday 1/3/2006.

As 2006 winds down, every member of the Laboratory Schools community is preparing for the wrap-up of the fall semester and the winter break. Some of us are busy tending to holiday tasks and festivities while others are booking flights to warmer climes.

I am tending to similar affairs and I am doing so with mixed emotions.

Our school community lost two of its members with the passing of Estella Reid on Nov. 23 and the death of Donald Hubert four days later. This is very sad news for many of us and on behalf of the Lab Schools’ Parents Association Governing Council I extend condolences to family members and all others who knew Estella and Don. Both were the parents of 7 th grade students who are long-time classmates and friends of my son, making the discussions about these events quite difficult.

There is no one-size-fits-all approach for parents when it comes to discussing the loss of loved ones. I lost my father in April of this year and was able to draw upon my own feelings of losing a parent when discussing the loss of Estella and Don with my kids. Even so, it was still an uneasy task. But it is important that we take the time to talk to our kids, about death, homework, dating, world events and, well, everything else imaginable.

Finding a way to connect with your child was among the key messages emphasized during the presentation on Oct. 24 by PA guest speaker, Dr. Michael Thompson. His topic was “The Pressured Child: Helping Your Child Find Success in School and Life” and parent-child communication is so vital to such an endeavor.

The importance of parent-child communication also was a recurring theme on Nov. 15 during a Middle School forum co-sponsored by the PA’s Multicultural Committee. The topic was “words that hurt” and about 60 parents exchanged ideas about ways to help our children understand the power and impact of words that are racisist, misogynistic, homophobic and otherwise troublesome -- for those who use them and those who might hear them.

The session was powerful because words are powerful. We gobble up words and regurgitate them every day, and the various media that are all around us ensure that potent words are never in short supply. Our kids can’t process this onslaught by themselves. They need our help.

Hopefully we all can spend such quality time with our children over the winter break.

Happy holidays, safe travels and best wishes in the new year.

NetDaySpeakUp Day is an annual event in which students in Ms. Lucy Gray’s classes have participated for the past four years. Anonymous data is collected from teachers and students in order to lobby Congress for increased funding for educational technology initiatives. Additionally, a set of aggregated data is received just for Lab, and this information can be potentially very helpful with the school's technology planning efforts.

This year, the survey participants also include parents. There is an emphasis on math and science teaching among the questions. Parents can preview the surveys by following the link www.NetDaySpeakUp.org . Enter the secret word "maroon" to access the survey.

The survey period has been extended through December 15th!

Despite the frigid temperatures the U-High Jazz Band under the direction of Mr. Dominic Piane played to an almost packed house. The brave souls who came out were well entertained for 2 hours. Some of the young musicians have been performing for years with the band, for others this was their first gig. They all did an excellent job.

The Hyde Park Jazz Society invited the U-High Jazz band to play at the legendary Checkerboard Lounge located at 5201 South Harper Court.

Dr. Jim Wagner of The Hyde Park Jazz Society stated that the group was developing a program to educate youth about Jazz music. The matinee performances are family programs, no liquor is served. Businesses in the community donated pizza and soda. The Hyde Park Jazz Society plans to invite schools from around the city to participate in CheckerJazz at the Checkerboard Lounge. The Society has invited the band to come back and perform next spring.

Bizaarnival was a big hit with the Lower School crowd. There was something for everyone. Hosted by the high school students, with the help of parents, the event was made enjoyable for young children. There were crafts tables, a haunted house, story telling, hay rides and loads of good food and fun.

Lower School students turned out in their scariest Halloween attire at the annual traditional Halloween parade. Led by the HS Jazz band, teachers and student paraded through the school as proud parents looked on. After the parade Lower School students participated in Halloween class activities and parties. Middle School students enjoyed pizza parties and movies throughout the day.

High School students enjoyed homecoming without incident. This year there was increased safety and security provided at the high school homecoming dance. Students found the dance to be enjoyable.
