Many parents were in attendance at the November PA meeting to hear Director Magill’s talk on teacher evaluations
and tenure at the Laboratory Schools. Dr. Magill described the criteria for teacher evaluation as applied to the
entire faculty and classroom instruction. At the end of the presentation, Dr. Magill fielded questions from the parents.
More information can be obtained from the November PA meeting minutes, that will be available prior to the December meeting.
In its endeavor to present information to you, at the December meeting the PA will present Director of Admissions,
Michael Veitch who will be talk about the admissions process.
Save the date for the second annual all-school Science Expo which takes place Saturday, February 25th 2006,
from 1-5 pm. This is the same date as Connections ‘06, so we are all looking forward to a fun-filled Lab School day!
Parent volunteers are needed to help make Science Expo ‘06 a great success. Would you give
one hour of your time? Volunteers are needed for setup, to staff the refreshments and program table and to be available
as students set up and clean up. Thanks to those of you who plan to, or have already volunteered through the
PA volunteer form.
Scientists, we are looking for kid-friendly, visually exciting presentations or demos for each of our Halls of Science:
astronomy, biology, chemistry, physics, earth science and technology.
For more information, or if you can help with general staffing or by giving a scientist presentation,
please email ScienceExpo@ucls.uchicago.edu.
On October 31, we sent in 3500 Box Tops which will translate into $350
to the Lab PA. Last year we used Box Tops earnings to buy pedometers
which are used in physical education classes for all children at Lab.
Please continue to support this easy and worthwhile program by clipping
Box Tops coupons from a variety of General Mills products such as cake
mixes, frostings, flour, cereal and yogurt. Collection bins are located
in the Blaine lobby, by the backdoor at Woodlawn or coupons can be given
to Michael Cefus, the Middle/High school security guard. We'll do the
rest!
Consider starting your holiday shopping at
www.boxtops4education.com by joining the Booster club and
getting cash back from merchants with no extra charge to you. Thanks to all our supporters!
On November 29, 2005, Carla Young, principal of the Nursery &
Kindergarten school at Lab, spoke to parents about Mel Levine's
Schools Attuned program offered by the All Kinds of Minds
institute. Ms. Young shared books and a short film about the program
and described Lab's involvement with the program. Over the last few
years, a number of teachers have taken advantage of the program's
week-long training sessions, and follow-up workshops. Over
50 (primarily lower and middle school) teachers are now trained. The
Schools Attuned program emphasizes the strengths of students rather
than their challenges or difficulties. Because of this philosophy Lab Schools educators feel that this program is
a good fit for the school. Many thanks to Carla Young for speaking to the group. We appreciate it.
Planning for future meetings is in progress. There will be
a group meeting with no "program" in January, followed by an evening program to be announced, in February,
possibly on assistive technology. We'll keep you posted.
Please let us know your thoughts about the LD@Lab group so far. Should we aim for more regular meetings of
some kind? What should the group aim to achieve by the end of the year? Or over the longer term? How do
we get there? We know there are "all kinds of minds" out there, hence lots of opinions
--so let us know your thoughts.
For more information or to join the LD@LAB mailing list, contact:
Paula Worthington,
or Julie Marie Lemon.
The following is status of the Indoor Air Quality Committee’s recent efforts in improving the environment
within the Laboratory Schools.
** This past summer extensive work was done on the cleaning and upgrading the air handling systems in Blaine,
Belfield and the High School. Performance deficiencies highlighted in the Tools for Schools audits have been
corrected by the recent upgrades. Because cleaning old air handling systems is difficult, performance will continue
to be monitored and corrections will be made as necessary. Also, some improvements have been made to the air handling
system that serves the basement and the first floor of Judd Hall. However, until the Laboratory Schools has complete
control over the building, it will be difficult to address Judd Hall issues in a comprehensive manner.
** Drinking fountain water quality will be checked. The EPA’s guidelines will be used as a benchmark.
** There are now four full-time custodians assigned to the Laboratory Schools. The level of cleanliness is much
improved and appears to be adequate at this time.
** The school is in the process of applying for the Tools for Schools Excellence Award. We have already received
the Great Start and Leadership awards and we’ve completed most of the requirements for the Excellence Award.
The Tools for Schools program has been one of our guides in improving the environment in the Labratory Schools.
Although the IAQ Committee has been successful on many fronts, because of the age of the buildings constant monitoring
and strategic improvement are necessary to maintain the quality of the environment. With continuing effort and
commitment by the Laboratory Schools’ administration, teachers, staff and parents we will ensure a safe and healthy
environment for our children.
The online volunteer system is now available. You’ll notice a slightly different look of the system entry.
Now you’ll only need to enter your last name, and first name, or primary phone number to view your volunteer form.
If you submitted an online form in the past, your volunteer form will display with any recorded information for you.
While the online volunteer system was undergoing its make-over, parents were instructed to continue using the
paper volunteer form, and most parents were contacted regarding their volunteer choices via this method.
Going forward with the online method, chosen volunteer activities will need to be entered into the online system.
If you have submitted a paper form, please take a moment to access the volunteer system and enter your volunteer
activity choices (even if those events have past and you’ve already worked them).
For those of you who have not signed up to volunteer for anything, and were perhaps waiting for the return of the
volunteer e-form, now is your chance. Please take a moment
and complete a volunteer form.
New parents to Lab were treated to light breakfast and the opportunity to meet with principals and PA Council
members at two events; the November 9th welcome reception for Middle School families and the November 30th
welcome reception for NK and Lower School families. Thanks to everyone who helped to make both events special
for the new families.
