If you didn’t have a chance to attend this year’s Rites of May, that took place on Thursday May 18th, Friday May 19th, and Saturday May 20th, you missed outstanding entertainment, great weather, and good food.

Those who attended the Saturday International Festival were treated to a nice sunny day that started off with the Family Fun Run/Walk on Jackman field.  After the run families assembled for the International festival parade lead by MS Principal Alexis Wright and 8th grade student  and International Booth co-chairperson, Safiya Nygaard. The parade culminated in a ribbon cutting ceremony, by Mrs. Biggs,in Upper Kovler Gym, signaling the opening of the Saturday International Festival.

The International Stage showcased the many outstanding talents of Lab Schools students, as well as professional entertainment featuring Nigerian dancers and musicians, and a Tai Chi demonstration. Music so adeptly performed by the children from the Hyde Park Suzuki Institute, opened the International stage, as athletics routines were dynamically displayed by the After-school programs Gymnastics class. Dancing was engagingly performed by Lab students representing the Hyde Park School of Ballet, Nori Indian dance, Chinese dance, the After-school programs Dance 101 and, Indian dance. There was an amazing performance of magician by U-High student Marcel Babai. The music continued with a moving performance by Lab students representing the  Hyde Park Youth Symphony as well as the exciting performance and  innovative Jazz sounds from U-High students Max Budovitch- piano, John Swank- drums, Richard Tomlinson- bass, Nathan Worcester- violin, and Philip Verma- clarinet/saxophone.  The International stage closed with the traditional Maypole dance performed by LS students.

The carnival provided hours of enjoyment for the children. Popular attractions included the inflatable slide and obstacle course. Children also enjoyed the age appropriate games such as football, and the great prizes.

The Global Café served hundreds, offering up healthy portions of a variety of very tasty foods. The convivial atmosphere provided a nice respite for parents.  Everyone was grateful for the free ice cream, courtesy of our local Good Humor ice cream vendors, in appreciation for our patronage throughout the year.

This year there was a record number of 19 country booths.  Nursery through 12th grade students participated in all 19 booths. Five of the booths were fundraising booths which raised over $1000 benefiting the Aga Khan foundation to help earthquake victims, Oxfam to help drought stricken villages, Operation Bookshelf a project created by LS teacher Nicole Power and her 4th grade students to help storm damaged schools in New Orleans, and the Louisiana Wetlands Project.

The fun didn’t stop with the day’s ending of the International festivities, the continuation of Thursday and Friday’s courtyard activities of games sponsored by Middle school students and food sponsored by High school student council and clubs, and the outstanding U-High theater presentation of “The Madwoman of Chaillot” closed Rites of May 2006. The entire cast of students turned in an impressive and entertaining performance. The set, costumes, and lighting, all student developed, made for a professional quality production. Noteworthy performances included that of Cydney Weiner as the Countess Aurelia The Madwomen of Chaillot, Kelly Kovacs as Irma, Leigh Casadaban as Dr. Jadin, and Jack Kovacs as The Ragpicker.
