Early in the evening of the April 9th PA meeting the PA board met to discuss and vote, in accordance with the PA by-laws, on a successor to Bennie Currie, who stepped down as PA President due to family priorities. The vote was unanimous for Maria Carrillo, 2005-2006 PA President, to be the interim 2006-2007 PA President. There were no other nominees slated.

Maria, assumed the duties as interim PA President immediately following the announcement provided by 2006-2007 PA President-Elect Dick Mintel. At which time Maria conducted the April 9th meeting. She will serve until the end of the school year, at which point Dick Mintel becomes PA President. Congratulations and Thanks to Maria!

Nominations have been re-opened for the following positions for the 2007-2008 school year:
*** President-Elect
*** Secretary-Elect
*** Treasurer-Elect
*** Communications Coordinator-Elect
*** Fundraising Coordinator-Elect
*** Volunteer Coordinator-Elect
*** Programs Coordinator-Elect
*** two representatives for the N/KG, Lower School, and Middle School Councils
*** and one representative for the High School Council.

Due to insufficient numbers of nominees for the positions President-Elect, Secretary-Elect, Treasurer-Elect, Communications Coordinator-Elect, and Volunteer Coordinator-Elect, there is still time to become a member of the PA Governing Board. The school councils garnered the most nominees. The nomination deadline has been extended until midnight Monday April 23rd.

To those of you who may be concerned about running in a contested race where you think that you are not as well known as other parents; know that your personal statement, that is sent along with the ballot to parents, is your best means of informing everyone of your intent and qualifications. The personal statement is the primary means that voters have in which to make their choice. Ensure that when completing your personal statement, that you explain what kind of difference you will make. And be sure to list any experience that may be considered relevant to the position that you are seeking. The time commitment of each board position can be as little or as much as you make it. While serving in the “elect” position, the time requirements are minimal. There are veteran parents who will be available to help and mentor you in the position in which you choose to serve.

On the evening of April 12th parents of middle school students had the opportunity to discuss among themselves, ways of responding to words that hurt.

Last fall the PA Multicultural Committee and the Middle School hosted an evening facilitated by Randolph Carter from the Eastern Educational Resource Collaborative, an organization whose mission is to serve as a resource to schools in supporting the establishment of equitable, anti-bias, and multicultural environments. The focus of the meeting was to discuss with parents the power of words.

For the April 12th meeting parents were encouraged to bring their middle school children. A number of teachers were in attendance. The adults and students separated into group sessions. Randolph Carter facilitated the meeting with the students. The Multicultural Committee members along with MS Principal Alexis Wright, facilitated the groups of adults.

The students and adults reassembled to discuss what each talked about in their respective break-out sessions. Due to time constraints no concrete action plans resulted from the meeting. Although parents were still able to gain insights into the thinking of Laboratory Schools Middle School students, and get a view into what is socially meaningful to the students.

Psychologist Dr. Michael Bradley will speak to parents at the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools, 1362 E. 59th St., Chicago IL, in the cafeteria on April 19th, 2007 from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM. Sponsored by Parents’ Association, the High School Council, and the High School , Dr. Bradley will speak on effective parenting of teens. This event is free and open to the community. If you work with adolescence or are the parent of children aged 11 to 17 and fancy yourself as a proactive and caring parent, you will want to attend this seminar.

Michael J. Bradley, Ed.D., has counseled adolescents and their parents for 30 years and currently has a private practice in suburban Philadelphia. Already a recognized specialist in adolescent behavior and grief counseling, Dr. Bradley is in demand as a speaker and facilitator at PTA conventions and other parenting groups. After September 11th, he was often called on to help parents and teens come to terms with the tragic events of that day. Dr. Bradley has appeared on over 200 radio and television shows, including The Today Show. He has also been the subject of numerous newspaper and magazine articles, including being called on to evaluate Ozzy Osbourne’s parenting skills (The Osbournes, MTV) for Rolling Stone (May 6, 2002). His Web site forum , found at www.docmikebradley.com, is a great source of advice and encouragement to parents.

In addition to earning three top literary awards, Dr. Bradley’s book, Yes, Your Teen Is Crazy! - Loving Your Kid Without Losing Your Mind, received kudos from two notable parenting organizations. Parents’ Choice, the nation’s oldest (25 years) not-for-profit consumer guide to quality children’s media, granted Yes, Your Teen Is Crazy! a 2002 Parents’ Choice Approved Award. Additionally, the National Parenting Center, chartered in 1989 to help create better- informed parents, conferred upon Dr. Bradley’s book its 2002 Seal of Approval.

The title of Dr. Bradley’s talk to parents at the Laboratory Schools is “Loving Your Kid Without Losing Your Mind”, which will cover topics from the book “Yes, Your Teen Is Crazy!”.

Yes, Your Teen Is Crazy! is based on recent groundbreaking studies which show that—contrary to earlier belief—the adolescent brain goes through a period of explosive new growth and rewiring. The result is the sometimes “crazy” behavior adolescents are famous for. Dr. Bradley uses this innovative information to help parents navigate the sometimes stormy waters of adolescence and emerge with the family intact. His second book, Yes, Your Parents Are Crazy!, a handy guide for teens trying to raise their parents, and his third book, The Heart & Soul of the Next Generation: Extraordinary Stories of Ordinary Teens, containing stories from Dr. Bradley’s case files, have also received The National Parenting Center’s Seal of Approval. All books can be found in bookstores, through Amazon.com, and on Dr. Bradley’s website.

Rites of May 2007 co-chairs Robin Charleston, Arlene Mays-Johnson, and Lori Lambert, are planning a day of fun for the entire school.

For those of you who are new to the Laboratory Schools, Rites of May is the three day all-schools celebration of creativity, arts, and cultural diversity at the schools. Rites of May begins on Thursday evening in the court yard where high school student activity clubs will provide food, lower school students man games booths, and the high school theater department will present a play. On the final day there is an international festival, sponsored by the Parents’ Association and an evening of courtyard games, food, and the high school play. The Saturday International Festival offers a carnival on Kenwood Mall, complete with games and inflatable rides, international food at the Global Café, International Booths representing countries from around the world complete with cultural arts and crafts activities, and the Rites of May Stage that will present performances from students in the After School programs, as well as groups from the community featuring Laboratory Schools students. This year Rites of May takes place Thursday May 17 through Saturday May 19th.

Over a hundred parent volunteers are needed to make Rites of May a success. If you’ve volunteered at Rites of May in the past and plan to volunteer on the day of the event please email the chairpersons, even if you’ve signed up using the volunteer form because there is no designated volunteer coordinator. If you would like to co-chair or help out with any of the planning committees, marketing, T-shirt sales, or volunteer coordination, also contact the event co-chairpersons.
