Online voting will be available to parents who choose to vote online. Paper ballots will still be available this year, and will be mailed to parents the second week in April. Parents will also receive an email that explains the voting process.

To vote online, parents need to first register. Upon successful registration a parent will receive a confirmation notice via email.

When the voting period opens, parents will have a choice of either completing the paper ballot and mailing it back to the PA Nominations committee, or to cast their vote online using their confirmation number from a successful registration to access the system to vote.

Watch your postal mail and email for more information.

The Middle and High Schools will participate in the American Diabetes Association's (ADA) School Walk for Diabetes. The School Walk is an education event that promotes student health, nutrition and physical activity, all while earning money towards physical education equipment for our school! Other money raised through School Walk for Diabetes supports ADA diabetes camp programs, $40 million in ADA research grants and other education outreach initiatives focused on those at risk or living with diabetes.

School Walk has recently partnered with the Chicago White Sox to create a one-of-a-kind incentive for schools that go the distance and raise more than $3500 to support the American Diabetes Association's mission: to prevent and cure diabetes and improve the lives of all those affected by the disease.

If we raise more than $3500, School Walk for Diabetes will invite the top TWO student fundraisers, one PARENT of each and the School Walk Coordinator to spend a day at US Cellular Field with players from the World Champion Chicago White Sox and the official White Sox trainer.

Our School Walk For Diabetes will take place as follows:

DATE: Friday, April 21, 2006 TIME: 12:10pm - 1:00pm (Gather in front of the Middle School or High School) ROUTE: Midway from Dorchester to Cottage Grove

FUND RAISING COLLECTION ENVELOPES WILL BE DISTRIBUTED STARTING MONDAY, APRIL 3 AND WILL NEED TO BE TURNED IN ON OR BEFORE APRIL 21 TO ONE OF THE COORDINATORS.

QUESTIONS? CONTACT: Middle School Coordinator, Frances Moore-Bond, 773-834-3428, or High School Coordinator, Maureen Gauntner, 773-702-0948.

Please mark your calendars for Tuesday, April 4, at 7:00 p.m., for our next meeting and program, College Preparation for LD Students. We will meet in Judd 126:

* Learn how to prepare your high school child for the college >selection process.
* Patty Kovacs, High School College Counselor, and Susan Snook, High School Learning Consultant, will present information, tools, and resources on how to find the right college fit for your child and what LD accommodations to expect from colleges.
* Hear from other parents who have gone through the college selection process.
* Come with your questions too!

Planning has begun for the time-honored spring festival PA sponsored “fun-raiser” Rites of May which will take place from Thursday May 18th through Friday May 20th. For those of you who are not familiar with the festival, Rites of May is a spring all-schools celebration where arts and entertainment are presented. Throughout the days of the festival, there is the Blaine Paperback book fair, a HS theater production in Blaine courtyard with food provided by HS clubs, and children’s games, created and operated by LS students. On Saturday, there is the International festival that consists of a carnival, entertainment, activity booths, and international foods.

Rites of May ’06 Co-chairs Annmarie Hanna and Evelyn Anthony are planning to continue the tradition of fun and excitement. Joining Annmarie and Evelyn are Maria Carillo- Carnivale, Mumtaz Champsi along with her daughter and friends- International booths, Nila Barnes – Entertainment, Peggy Kucera, Jane Hensel, Caroline Flatow, Nicole Power-Global Café, Marsha Spak-tickets, Wendy Minor-t-shirt design, Linda Levin-t-shirt production, and Jennifer Rhind – volunteer coordination.

Help is still very much needed for planning. There is still a need for someone to head up Marketing and Publicity. If you can assist in planning in any of the areas: marketing and publicity, country booths (know of anyone who’d like to sponsor a booth), international foods, entertainment (know of anyone who’d like to perform), or any ideas that you can share, please contact Annmarie.

Day-of-event volunteers are also needed. The Rites of May online Volunteer system will be available again this year. If you have already signed up to volunteer for this year’s Rites of May through the PA Volunteer system you will be contacted as we get closer to the event date.

Thanks to everyone who clipped and saved for Box Tops over the last few months. We submitted almost $250 worth of coupons in February. We are accumulating approximately $50-$60/month with this program. That's great but I know we can do better. If every Lab family joined our effort this could be a very lucrative project. Please encourage your fellow Lab parents, friends and families to help us save Box Tops coupons.

We are also collecting Campbell's soup labels which can be dropped in the same collection bins in the Blaine Lobby, the back door of Woodlawn or with Michael, the security guard in the Middle School lobby. Thanks again!!
