** Open call for performers at Rites of May.
Entertainment planning is in progress. Although many of the groups who performed last year will be returning, we still are looking for additional performers {musicians, dancers, actors (we need an MC), athletes (e.g. marshal arts, fencing exhibitions)}. Parents, if you are interested in performing, or would like for your child or your child’s school (dance, marshal arts, etc.) to perform, please contact the Entertainment Chairperson, by April 8th.
** Connections exceeds expectations
Parents, teachers, administrators, alumni, and friends, came together to raise funds for the professional development of teachers. With preliminary numbers in, Connections has raised close to $200,000.
Parents in large numbers answered Science teacher Diane Snider’s call for volunteers to work behind the scenes at the 2005 Science Expo. Parents made a difference, from welcoming attendees, providing refreshments, to operating the Hall of Refreshments and even contributing science demonstrations.
This, first ever Lab School Science Expo, was an impressive undertaking. It was a cross-curricular event that involved contributions from all of the schools. There were 140 projects, presentations, activities, stories and exhibits located in seven “Halls of Science” that included Astronomy, Science Fiction, Biology, Earth Science, Technology, Chemistry, and Physics.
In past years, there was only the 5th grade science fair. This year, all students in grades 3 through 12, were offered the opportunity to present science projects that they’d done in class, or demonstrations designed exclusively for the exposition. The cross-curricular aspects of the expo could be seen through the use of story telling provided by the Librarians, the use of theater provided by some of the Middle School students who impersonated famous scientist, in “Meet the Scientists”, and in the “Science Jeopardy” game that was offered, and humanities with the “Contributions of African-American Scientists” display that was provided by a parent. There were parent-provided exhibits that showcased a variety of topics in the areas of technology, astronomy, biology, and chemistry.
There are plans to have another Science Expo next year. If you have suggestions for next year’s fair, or if you’d like to provide your thoughts about Expo 2005, you can email to scienceexpo@ucls.uchicago.edu .
The Physical Education Department showcased the importance and benefits of a good physical education program, by exhibiting some of the physical fitness activities in which students are involved. The Gym Show offered parents the opportunity to get a glimpse of what their students are learning in class.
Lower School students demonstrated the skills that they acquired, in the areas of dance, floor hockey, basketball, jump rope, throwing and catching, gymnastics, football, swimming, volleyball, and soccer. The day show offered a dance presentation and a fencing exhibition by students from the High School. Both the day and evening shows were jam packed with the energy and enthusiasm of the students. Although the evening show was primarily intended for parents, both shows enjoyed close to gym capacity crowds, with quite a few parents attending both shows.
Keep collecting those Box Tops! The next submission
deadline is March
31. We want to exceed our last submission and we are
behind!! Please note that the collection box in the
Middle school lobby was removed after someone defaced
it and used it to dispose of trash. So please leave your
coupons with Middle School security guard Michael
Cephus or drop them into the bin in the Blaine lobby.
Thanks again for all the support!
WHY WAIT UNTIL AUGUST!

The nomination process has been extended. There is still time to nominate yourself or another parent for any of the following offices:
President-Elect, Secretary-Elect, Treasurer-Elect, Communications Coordinator-Elect, Fundraising Coordinator-Elect, Volunteer Coordinator-Elect, and Programs Coordinator-Elect. In addition there are openings for two representatives for the N/KG, Lower School, and Middle School Councils, and for one representative for the High School Council.
Service on the governing board lasts for two years. The positions with the designations "elect" are associate roles primarily charged with learning what their responsibilities will be, and how to perform them when they assume the primary positions (President, Secretary, Treasurer, etc.) in the second year. Each council consists of three parents. Parents who are serving in their second year on the council act as senior members of the council.
All of the governing board positions have substantial responsibilities, varying in nature and degree. All require regular attendance at monthly Parents’ Association business meetings, working with other parents, and in some cases, working with Parents’ Association Committees. For more information on the requirements and qualifications for each of the open PA governing board positions, visit the PA website.
Is a PA position right for you or someone you know? Position responsibilities are listed in Article V of the PA bylaws. Please feel free to contact any of the current PA office holders. Our names are listed in the School Directory and Resource Guide and are listed on the website. Come to a PA meeting!
Nomination forms are available through the Administrative Forms link on the PA website, or from current PA board members.
