Congratulations to our newly elected PA 2005-2006 Governing Board members!

They are as follows: President-Elect: Bennie Currie, Secretary-Elect: Debbie Mansfield, Communications Coordinator-Elect: Arlene Mays-Johnson, Programs and Events Coordinator-Elect: Leslie Africano, Volunteer Coordinator-Elect: Deborah Telman. They assume full position in the 2006-2007 school year.

Each council consists of three parents. The following newly elected parents will serve as junior members of the council in 2005-2006 and as senior members of the council in 2006-2007. High School Council Co-Chairperson: Lori Stewart, Middle School Council Co-Chairperson (2): Carol Lucido and Leslie Pilot-Gatton, Lower School Council Co-Chairperson (2): Lisa Curci and Gail Rodman, Nursery/Kindergarten Co-Chairperson (2): Robin Goolsbee and Karen Onel

A special thanks to all of the candidates, and to all who participated in the election process.

From the inaugural family fun/run, to the carnival, to storytelling, to the Multi-Cultural stage, to the Global Cafe, there was something for everyone at this year’s Rites of May festival. Co-Chairs Kate Surmeier and Debbie Chizewer realized their vision of all school inclusion. The event succeeded as planned. This year's Saturday International Fesitval welcomed more than 800 visitors.

As a precursor to the events of the day, families started with the family fun run/walk, and were serenaded at the finish line by the Mark Piane quartet, who led everyone to the International Festival.

Flags from the over 60 countries of origin of our Lab Schools family, were placed along the fence outside the kindergarten playground. Country booths from twelve nations provided fun and educational presentations, arts and crafts. The seven booths managed by Middle School students was a great success. These booths were some of the "most-visited" at the festival.

The Multi-Cultural Stage showcased the tremendous talents of Lab Schools students from nursery through high school. The various acts put on a very impressive show. The Stage enjoyed a large audience from the opening act through the finale.

Tickets continually sold out, as visitors brought more food, played more carnival games, and made more crafts at the country booths. Record-breaking ticket sales were reported.

Visitors enjoyed more carnival games and received higher quality prizes, and when they got hungry, were able to visit the Global Cafe. This year the Cafe hosted a dining and entertainment experience, from its performance art to its harp music. Visitors with young children were able to enjoy storytelling in the Secret Garden.

A huge thanks to all of the planners and organizers, the school's staff, the students, and the parent volunteers. You made the difference.

This year's Rites of May promised and to be memorable and enjoyable for all, and it delivered.

Used textbook buy-back is here! Turn in used books on from June 3 through June 10. (The Lab Bookstore will be open the day after school ends to accommodate students who clean out their lockers that day.) High School books are in great demand! Returning students will receive vouchers. Non-returning students with no siblings in grades six through 12 in 2005-06 will receive cash for their books. Vouchers, which will save you money on used books or new books and supplies from the bookstore, are good thru Oct. 31, 2005. So watch for the list of eligible books. For more information, contact Suzanne Beatus .

In addition, buy-back volunteers are needed for book sorting (on June 14), voucher mailing (two evenings in July) and for the used book sale. Volunteers have the advantage of getting first pick of used books before the sale is open to the public! To help, sign-up online or contact at Jean Doherty-Greenberg .

The PA hosted its annual Faculty/Staff Appreciation Breakfast, on Wenesday June 1 from 7:30 a.m. to 10 a.m in Judd 126. This yearly event honors our faculty and staff by providing something that they can really value: free food. It also affords parents the opportunity personally thank teachers.

Don't forget the Box Tops for Education program over the summer months!! We will still be collecting coupons next fall, so clip and save over the summer for Lab. And if you will be visiting family and friends this summer, don't forget to recruit more volunteer clippers for great returns for Lab. Surely you wouldn't knowingly throw a dime into the garbage, but that's what you do whenever you throw away a Box Tops for Education coupon printed on food product packaging. Help us help Lab by participating in this worthwhile project. Thanks to all our dedicated savers, enjoy your summer vacation and we'll see you next year! Questions, please contact at Bobbie Sweitzer.

To those of you who answered the call to duty, from chaperoning, assisting teachers in the classroom, providing your unique skills and talents, to shoring up those last minute details, you gave us a precious commodity, your time, and we the entire Laboratory Schools community greatly appreciate you. For all you do, we salute you!
