Chinese people believe their ancient culture was a gift from the heavens. In light of this, Lunar New Year became a time to pay tribute to ancestors and the heavens. Chinese New Year is also a time for fun and celebration. It's known around the world for its lanterns, firecrackers and loud joyous festivities!

After a year of hard work, it is time to treat yourself and your loved ones to something truly unforgettable. Plan to experience New Tang Dynasty TV's 2006 Chinese New Year Gala at the Arie Crown Theater 2301 S. Lake Shore Drive, February 4, 2006, 7:00 pm.

This is a unique opportunity to celebrate China’s age-old traditions and enjoy examples of the performing arts in the Western traditions. Hundreds of talented Asian and Western artists will come together for this spectacular event of music, dance, acrobatics, and world-class entertainment for the entire family.

A special 10% discount is offered to school staff, teachers, students and parents. Mention University of Chicago Lab School when you call 312-225-5120 or 312-808-9469. You may also order tickets online using the discount code “chicagoschool”. Also offered is a 10% discount for groups with a minimum of 10 people and 20% discount for groups with a minimum of 30 people. The school discount and the group discount cannot be combined, however. There are brochures about the event in UH107.

Saturday, February 25th in the Winter Garden of the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business.

At Lab, language study begins in the third grade and continues throughout the students’ education. Changes in technologies make it necessary for Lab to update its outdated analog system and allow our school and our children to be competitive in today’s world. A new language lab will allow our students greater exposure and practice with the languages they are studying. The newest generation digital language lab will enable students to hear authentic language from native speakers, create audio and video recordings of themselves actively using the language, teleconference with other students both here and abroad, and collaborate on media intensive group projects.

The proceeds from Connections 2006 are critical for the completion of the new digital language lab. With every parent’s support we can keep our school at the forefront of education and our children will continue to be among the best educated in the nation.

You can help make this event a success by….
Underwriting the event

Underwriters at $2500 and more will have their names put on a permanent plaque to be hung in the new digital language lab.

Purchasing tickets to the event

The Parents' Association is planning a "get-together" for parents, at 6:00 PM immediately prior to the February 13th PA meeting. It will provide an opportunity for parents to meet other parents. In the tradition of the Lower School potluck socials, each parent is encouraged to bring a lite food item to share. However a food item is not required in order to attend.

Everyone should plan to attend and stay for the PA meeting that immediately follows. This month's PA meeting's guest speaker is 5th grade teacher and president of the Laboratory Schools Faculty Association Bob Kass, who will talk about his role as President and about the role the Faculty Association plays in the Lab Schools.
