Connections 2006 will be held in the Winter Garden of the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business on Saturday, February 25th .
Connections is Lab’s annual benefit and fundraiser for the school. This year's event Chairs include Susan and Allison Davis, ’56
and honorary Chairs Michelle and Barack Obama.
Proceeds this year will support the creation of a digital language lab. All Lab students will benefit from this cutting edge educational technology to better prepare them for the ever expanding global marketplace. This digital language lab will benefit our children and the issues of tomorrow’s society -- in higher education, in business, in government, and abroad. As parents, it is our responsibility to support our school’s efforts in this endeavor and we encourage each of you to participate in Connections 2006.
There are so many ways to be a part of Connections:
• Make an underwriting gift or help to secure your company’s support. Volunteers will be calling for your underwriting support in January.
• Buy tickets for a great evening of entertainment, dinner, dancing, and a silent auction
• Invite a special teacher as your family’s guest
• Donate a fabulous auction item – or purchase one at the event. To donate auction items (remember items donated for auction are tax deductible), please contact Carol Kamin at carolkaminl@mac.com
• Buy an Ad – the ad book is back! Take this opportunity to showcase your business to a diverse and well-educated clientele! To place an ad contact Lori Sykes-Stewart at lorrod@aol.com
• Buy a raffle ticket - Take a chance – you could be the big winner of the cash prize! Raffle tickets will come with your invitations in the mail.
• Volunteer to help at the event – Join our army of volunteers; meet great people and have fun at the same time!
To learn more about how you can support our school through Connections, please contact the Development Office at 773.702.0578 or by email at Connections@ucls.uchicago.edu.
With busy lives and so many volunteer opportunities from which to choose, here are a few tips for getting and staying involved:
* Attend the monthly Parent Association meetings. This is a parent’s forum for information sharing between parents, faculty and administration. Attending a regular meeting can provide you with a sense of community. It’s a short-term (2-hours a month) volunteer commitment for your benefit.
* Look for volunteer opportunities that fit. Assess your skills and talents and the level at which you can volunteer. Choose from the various volunteer opportunities listed on the PA website.
* Propose your own volunteer opportunities to the PA. Can’t find volunteer activities of interest at the PA website? Propose your own. Great ideas are always welcomed. You might uncover a need that was overlooked.
* Do what you can. Follow through with what you can realistically commit to providing. There are numerous opportunities for short-term volunteer commitments like chaperoning and greeters for one day events, as well as long term events such as serving on a committee or holding an office on the PA board.
* Inform your family of your intent to volunteer. A lot of kids in the lower school love for their parent to volunteer in the classroom. In fact some feel a little disappointed when a classmates’ parent chaperones a trip and their parent is unable. But keep in mind that your volunteer activity might interfere with your kid’s time, e.g. long term activities such as service on a committee might detract from evening time with the kids. So do let your kids know.
* Don’t assume that your help is not wanted. Just because mom seems to volunteering for everything is no reason for dad not to volunteer. Expressing an interest in volunteering and not getting called, is also not reason to give up on volunteering. It’s not a snub, but more the result of either a miscommunication or a volunteer surplus. Try following up, at least once. If you feel strongly about helping, don’t give up.
* Assert your leadership. Since PA board and committee volunteers change from year to year, programs are often passed on to the next willing leader—without discussing whether they should be continued. If you feel strongly about a program, take the lead. For example, In 2004, the Innisbrook wrapping paper program was all but extinguished, when two parents stepped up to take the lead in organizing this program in 2005.
* Let your voice be heard. Take the time to vote. Perhaps you are unable to volunteer at the level of PA board, nominate and elect people who are willing to make the commitment.
