** Enjoying Risk: Why is Gambling So Much Fun? - Thursday December 9th, 1:00 pm - 1:45 PM, in Judd 126.
During HS double lunch, Prof. Zvi Gilula from the University of Chicago will talk with seniors, faculty, and other interested community members about his work on the psychology and ''probabilities'' of gambling. A short description of his talk:
If I offered you a financial plan that on the average would cause you to lose over 70% of your investment, you would certainly turn me down with contempt. It's not rational to want to lose so much. Yet when it comes to gambling (which in most cases yields that rate of return), people appear to behave irrationally. In this talk, amazingly simple and simply amazing facts about gambling behavior will be presented, analyzed, and reflected upon. I will talk about my observations in casinos, including interviews with gamblers, card dealers, and casino managers. We will not discuss gambling as a moral issue, but as a window into human behavior and psychology.
Aside from being a professor of statistics at the GSB, Prof. Gilula also has a degree in psychology, and teaches at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. He was also chief scientific advisor to the Israeli National Lottery.

hopefully, make some money for the event which will go toward the
professional development fund for Lab faculty. Ideas for auction items are still welcomed. If you have a particular interest that you would like to share with the Lab community in an “auction-able package”, please email connections2005@hotmail.com.
