The deadline for voting in 2006-2007 PA Board Elections has been extended until 3:30 PM on Friday May 12th.
By now you should have received your ballot in the mail. If you did not
receive a ballot, contact nomination committee chairperson Robin Charleston .
This year, You have the option of voting by mail or online.
***To vote by mail: complete the ballot, place it in the return envelope that
was included in the mailing, and stamp and mail it.
*** To vote online:
You have to first be registered.
If you have registered and you know your registration number, what are you waiting for? Go ahead and vote now.
If you have not registered and intend to vote online, go and register.
Upon successful registration a parent will receive a registration number.
Then VOTE.
When the page is displayed, use your registration number from your successful registration
and the ballot number from your paper ballot that you received in the
mail.
Complete the ballot and press the submit button. Please verify your
choices before submitting your ballot, because the submission process is
irreversible. Make sure that you follow all directions on the ballot, by
voting for the appropriate number of candidates, and by voting only in the
council elections for the school in which you will have a child enrolled
next year. Note that, just as with the paper ballots, there is only one
ballot per family. Even if both parents have registered, only one ballot
number will be accepted.
When your ballot has been successfully submitted, a screen will display your choices along with the
names of the candidates who are running unopposed.
If you encounter any problems in using the system, or if you’ve registered
and misplaced your registration number, please contact nomination
committee online voting point of contact, Arlene Mays-Johnson.
We appreciate hearing about your experiences in using the online voting
system. Please send comments to the '06 Nominations committee.
If you have not as yet voted, it is most important that you
vote in the PA elections regardless of the method that you choose. So go ahead, vote now!
On Friday, April 21, 2006, 81 Middle School and 20 High School students, as well as approximately 18 faculty and staff,
participated in the School Walk for Diabetes (SWFD).
School Walk for Diabetes is an educational fund-raising program
that promotes healthy living, school spirit and community service. While raising money for the American Diabetes Association
(ADA), students learned about diabetes and the importance of making healthy choices, such as eating good-for-you foods
and exercising daily. Money collected during the fund-raising period of School Walk for Diabetes, will help to fund diabetes
research, education and advocacy provided by the ADA.
School Walk for Diabetes was also an event that brought together Middle School and High School students in support of an
important cause. There are more than 18 million Americans living with diabetes. According to research done by ADA:
• 33% of children born after the year 2000 will develop diabetes during his/her life
• 50% of African American and Hispanic children will develop diabetes during his/her life
• 80% of children with type 2 diabetes are overweight upon diagnosis
• Prevalence of obesity in children has tripled since 1970
• Less than 25% of children participate in moderate physical activity twice a week
• More than 25% of children watch four or more hours of television a day
In support of the CURE, CARE and COMMITMENT of the American Diabetes Association, the University of Chicago Laboratory
Middle and High School students raised $4,179.66. Top Middle School student fund-raisers were: Jordan Einhorn, $435;
Tony Shaw, $413; Sheba Nelson, $300; Ariana Grymski, $300; Hanna Reepy, $249; Kira Fujibayashi, $210; Sally Ladsaria,
$153; Siobhan O’Muircheartaigh, $150; Sarah Curci, $125; and Liana Manuel, $101.
Thank you to everyone who helped make this event successful.
On Thursday May 4th, from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM, the MS Principal and MS Council will host the inaugural Parent-to-Parent meeting, for 6th and 7th
grade parents.
Parents will come together to talk about issues related to adolescent development and parenting.
Specifically, parents will discuss developmental and social topics – not academic issues.
The meeting will focus on the following topics:
--Adolescents and friendships
--Fostering self-esteem in adolescents
--Parental Control (and when to let go)
--Parental communication with adolescents
The meeting will be facilitated by Ms. Evelina Pereira-Webber, who is certified in Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy.
Ms. Pereira-Webber has worked in private practice with adolescents and adults for over fifteen years, and she has led
similar meetings at independent schools throughout the Chicago area.
This evening will allow parents to meet other parents and exchange ideas, share parenting strategies and discuss how issues
are handled within individual families. The Middle School Council and MS Principal are committed to fostering avenues for
parents to have a chance to build lasting friendships, enhance our vibrant school community and share the joys and
frustrations of parenting middle schoolers!
The time-honored spring festival PA sponsored “fun-raiser” Rites of May takes place from
Thursday May 18th through Friday May 20th.
For those of you who are not familiar with the festival, Rites of May is a spring all-schools celebration where arts and
entertainment are presented. Throughout the days of the festival, there is the Blaine Paperback book fair, a HS theater
production in Blaine courtyard with food provided by HS clubs, and children’s games, created and operated by LS students.
On Saturday, there is the International festival that consists of a carnival, entertainment, activity booths, and
international foods.
The range of volunteer opportunities is huge - from selling t-shirts in Blaine the week before, to volunteering at the
international booths, to helping serve food at the Global Café.
Day-of-event volunteers are needed now.
We need families who would be willing to volunteer for two-hour time slots on Saturday, May 20th.
A small number of parent volunteers are also needed to help run the courtyard games on Thursday, May 18th and Friday,
May 19th.
On May 9th, Annmarie Hannah will coordinate a phone-a-thon to recruit volunteers for the Rites of May.
If you have already signed up to volunteer for this year’s Rites of May through the PA Volunteer system you will be
contacted at this time.
The phone-a-thon will take place between 5:30-8:30 at Linda Levine's office in River North. We need approximately
20 volunteers. If you would like to volunteer to recruit more volunteers via the phone-a-thon, please contact
Annmarie Hanna before May 9th.
Parents: We need your help for the Buy-Back (6/2 - 6/9), Book Sorting (6/13), Voucher Mailing (in July), and Fall Sale. Buy-Back hours are 9:30 until close of school, 6/2 - 6/8, and 10 - 1 on 6/9. Volunteers are given the opportunity to purchase used books for their children before the sale is open to the public. To help, please send an email to uclsusedbooksale@aol.com
or call Suzanne Beatus at 773/227-9999.
Parents, let your students know to: Turn in their used books FRIDAY, 6/2, through FRIDAY, 6/9 (the day after school ends). The Buy-Back tables will be in the corridor at the top of the back stairs to the Cafeteria. Returning students will receive vouchers for their books. Non-returning students with no siblings at Lab next year in grades 6 - 12 will receive cash. (The families of all other non-returning students will receive vouchers since the siblings can use them.) Vouchers can be spent on new books and supplies at the Lab Bookstore as well as used books, and are good thru 10/31/2006. The list of eligible books will be available shortly before the Buy-Back begins. For more information, contact Suzanne Beatus or call her at 773/227-9999.
