Lab parents interested in forming a Learning Differences Support/Advocacy
Group for Lab School students with LD, please contact Linda Levin
or Phoebe Naoum.
Your input is vital to the creation of this
new PA sponsored group. For a description of the type of group being
considered, please go to the Schwab Learning website .
** Open call for performers at Rites of May.
Entertainment planning is in progress. Although many of the groups who performed last year will be returning, we still are looking for additional performers {musicians, dancers, actors (we need an MC), athletes (e.g. marshal arts, fencing exhibitions)}. Parents, if you are interested in performing, or would like for your child or your child’s school (dance, marshal arts, etc.) to perform, please contact the Entertainment Chairperson, by April 8th.
The PA board would like to extend a huge "THANK YOU!" to all the volunteers whose tireless efforts helped make Connections 2005 such a tremendous success! This
year's proceeds to benefit the Lab Professional Development Endowment will exceed $200,000 thanks to the generosity of so many Lab families, faculty and staff.
On March 31st, Muntu Dance Theatre of Chicago performed for the Middle School, Lower School and Nursery/Kindergarten afternoon classes. Muntu dancers performed harvest and coming of age dances from West Africa. Students enjoyed the drumming and learned about the use of drums as communication devices.
President Randel and Provost Saller's Diversity Statement
inspired Lab Parents Mumtaz Champsi, Sonya Malunda and Lynn Stevenson to work with Mrs. Biggs and Mr. Wright to bring this celebration to Lab School. We would like to thank the University's Office of Community Affairs for sponsoring this event.
In the near future on the PA website, there will be an on-line form to report health, safety and environmental concerns at the Laboratory Schools. The form, Report of Health or Safety Concern, is already in use by faculty, staff and administration. Categories on the form include: Heating, Vermin, Cleaning/Trash Collection, Water Quality, etc. Mr. Magill is committed to improving our school's environment and we need your input to make that happen. While the form is the preferred method of informing the school that an unhealthy or unsafe condition exists, if you do not have computer access, we encourage you to report your concern to the relevant school principal.
The committee is working closely with the administration and as part of the Tools for Schools team, to improve the environment at Lab School and welcomes your input. If you have any questions please contact any of the Air Quality Committee members: Mumtaz Champsi,
Arlene Mays Johnson or
Craig Schuttenberg.
WHY WAIT UNTIL AUGUST!
You can now access our new volunteer e-form and beat the "Mad August Rush" of submitting school documents for 2005-2006. It's simple to use and takes about 2 minutes to fill out. So access the e-form by clicking the Volunteer Form link on the PA homepage and proceed to select your volunteer preferences and submit them today.
Parents helped to facilitate the wonderful performance of the Middle School Jazz Band led by Mr. Brad Brickner and Mr. Lee Gustafson, at the Quadrangle Club. The band performed before a standing room only crowd. Family and friends not only enjoyed wonderful music but also good food.
A sincere thanks to all who came out to support the MS Jazz Band. We hope to see you next year.
The nomination process has been extended. There is still time to nominate yourself or another parent for any of the following offices:
President-Elect, Secretary-Elect, Treasurer-Elect, Communications Coordinator-Elect, Fundraising Coordinator-Elect, Volunteer Coordinator-Elect, and Programs Coordinator-Elect. In addition there are openings for two representatives for the N/KG, Lower School, and Middle School Councils, and for one representative for the High School Council.
Service on the governing board lasts for two years. The positions with the designations "elect" are associate roles primarily charged with learning what their responsibilities will be, and how to perform them when they assume the primary positions (President, Secretary, Treasurer, etc.) in the second year. Each council consists of three parents. Parents who are serving in their second year on the council act as senior members of the council.
All of the governing board positions have substantial responsibilities, varying in nature and degree. All require regular attendance at monthly Parents’ Association business meetings, working with other parents, and in some cases, working with Parents’ Association Committees. For more information on the requirements and qualifications for each of the open PA governing board positions, visit the PA website.
Is a PA position right for you or someone you know? Position responsibilities are listed in Article V of the PA bylaws. Please feel free to contact any of the current PA office holders. Our names are listed in the School Directory and Resource Guide and are listed on the website. Come to a PA meeting!
Nomination forms are available through the Administrative Forms link on the PA website, or from current PA board members.
